New high school teacher in Virginia has a story to tell

A high school English teacher in West Virginia has come forward with a new story about how she was treated when she was fired after she refused to perform a job she didn’t want to do, a school official said.

Teacher Lori K. Kornet, 31, who taught for 10 years at Houghton Elementary School in Greenbrier, West Virginia, told reporters she was told by a supervisor that she had been fired for refusing to perform the duties of a teacher in the district’s special education program, according to the district, which said the dismissal was based on a complaint by a teacher’s union.

“She was given a letter of termination,” said District Superintendent Michael Glynn.

Karnet was notified by a local supervisor that the employee was fired, and she was placed on administrative leave, he said.

“She never received a letter to return to the classroom.”

“She did not receive an apology,” Glynn said.

He said the district is in the process of making a formal complaint.

The school district said it has not confirmed the incident with the employee.

Kournet’s attorney, Richard H. Schmitt, declined to comment.

Kohnet has not been charged in the incident.
